In the sports sector, we find almost all forms of corruption; clientelism, bribery, extortion, embezzlement, fiscal fraud, match fixing, doping, etc.

Without good governance, the problem cannot be tackled. Several positive trends can be reported for Belgium. To illustrate, since 2016, Flemish sports federations receive subsidies not only based on membership volume, but also on adherence to basic principles of good governance. This due to a code and indicators of good governance in Flemish sport federations co-developed by Arnout Geeraert (expert of Transparency International and Postdoctoral Researcher LINES Institute – KU Leuven International and European Studies).
